Leaving a Godly Legacy (Proverbs 20:7): A Life That Blesses Generations

A powerful digital painting of a lone believer holding a glowing Bible high while standing against a vast shadowy crowd. A fiery path of footprints leads toward a massive radiant cross on the horizon, with people of all ages and generations stepping out of the darkness to follow the light.
One righteous life can blaze a path for generations—choosing faith over the world and leaving a Godly legacy that endures.

Proverbs 20:7

“Good people live right, and God blesses the children who follow their example.”

Legacy. I’ve been hearing this word a lot lately, and I felt the Lord wanted us to understand something deeper. What happens at the end of our lives? As believers, do we truly get to leave a legacy?

After all, it’s not me but Christ in me that I am able to do good at all. When we look back, what we often see are the situations where the Lord came to rescue us or gave us the power to overcome. Yet in each of those moments, there was still an element of choice—free will. At the start of every call, there is a “yes” or a “no” on our part. Just as there was the day we decided Jesus died for our sins and rose again.

Compared to the mighty work of the Lord, our choice seems microscopic. But it is still the moment when we say, “Here I am, Lord. Use me.”

The apostle Paul reminds us in Romans 8:17: “We will also share in the glory of Christ because we have suffered with him.”

What an awesome promise! Because we suffer with Christ, we will also share in His future glory. That truth gives meaning to the legacy we are leaving behind.

In this life, we have two options. We can leave behind a legacy that looks impressive to the world but fades in light of eternity. Or, we can leave a Godly legacy that points directly to our Heavenly Father. The legacy created by an obedient life is one that lasts for generations, blessing children and grandchildren as an example of right living with the Lord.

We’ve all witnessed moments where someone’s faith-driven life transcended boundaries and divisions. Their legacy wasn’t about worldly success but about faith in God. That kind of legacy leaves people saying, “I want to know the God they served.”

That, my brothers and sisters, is the kind of legacy we want when the Lord calls us home. A testimony so rooted in obedience and faith that generations are drawn closer to Christ because of it.

Proverbs 13:22 also reminds us:

“If you obey God, you will have something to leave your grandchildren. If you don’t obey God, those who live right will get what you leave.”

Leaving a Godly legacy (Proverbs 20:7) isn’t about building our own name. It’s about living so fully surrendered to Jesus that His work through us blesses generations to come.

Thank You, Father, for another day to choose obedience. Help us to live in such a way that the legacy we leave brings glory to You and points our children, grandchildren, and everyone we touch closer to Christ.
