Putting God at the Center of Your Work and Legacy

Psalms 127:1-2
[1] Unless the Lord builds a house, the work of the builders is wasted. Unless the Lord protects a city, guarding it with sentries will do no good. [2] It is useless for you to work so hard from early morning until late at night, anxiously working for food to eat; for God gives rest to his loved ones.
What is your center? What is the reason behind all your work, your finances, and the legacy you want to leave behind? A lot of honest people would tell you it's their own hard work, ambition, and planning that they are relying on. We have all seen very "successful" people who worked incredibly hard, sacrificed everything, and became extremely wealthy because of it. They work an insane number of hours, and even in their downtime they would drop everything if something was needed at the office. It blows my mind!
Throughout history we have seen many people like this, and a lot of them have brought some pretty amazing things into the world. When I see that, I am thankful for their contributions, but I can't help but wonder if, later in life, they believe it was worth it. I'm sure many of them would say yes, but as followers of God there is so much more to life than this. I believe it all depends on where your focus is and what your goal is while you're here on earth.
As followers of Christ, what do we consider worthwhile or meaningful according to what we know from the Bible? God at the center should be the answer. The reason for our work is God, our financial stability is ultimately reliant on God, and our legacy is His legacy. Our work, our safety, and our security all come from Him. This far surpasses any invention or contribution this world could ever offer.
What we gain by keeping God at the center and living the life He has called us to is meaning, purpose, and peace. That is something worth sharing even more than an inventor shares and promotes an incredible new creation. They will shamelessly tell everyone how amazing and necessary their invention is, while we have the very meaning of life living in our hearts and often stay quiet. Be shameless in sharing the Lord with people and telling them how the burden of life is lifted when we live according to what He has called us to.
What a relief! This frees us from chasing made-up mile markers. We simply rely on our Heavenly Father for the outcome by obeying what He places before us in each moment and working as though He were standing right beside us. Unless we work to obey what the Lord puts in our path, our work is wasted and meaningless in light of eternity.
The work we do with God at the center brings rest and peace because we know what we are doing will last far beyond what we can see here. We don't have to anxiously wonder what to do next. The Lord is building our house, and He is the foundation.

Colossians 3:23-24
[23] Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. [24] Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ.
