Spiritual Warfare: Why the Enemy Attacks After the Mountaintop

A man sits at the top of a mountain trail with his arms raised in worship beside a cross at sunrise, while a rocky path descends toward a busy city filled with traffic and everyday life. Pieces of the armor of God line the path, symbolizing preparation for the spiritual battles waiting beyond the mountaintop.
Sometimes the hardest part isn't reaching the mountaintop... it's walking back down and remembering to bring God with you.

Ephesians 6:11-13

[11] Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. [12] For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. [13] Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.

I remember a phrase I heard at church many years ago: "After spiritual highs come spiritual lows."

I didn't really understand it back then because my biggest high was just worship night at church. Now, the highs and lows feel like they're at opposite ends of a grand canyon, and the lows can be really rough if I'm not prepared. The enemy is always prowling and just loves to attack you on your way home from church.

Just a week or so ago, my wife and I were attacked on our way home from a marriage group. I'm so thankful we recognized what happened, were able to pray about it, and by God's grace, we managed to get out pretty quickly.

Unfortunately, those low points tend to creep in when we're not prepared or when we let our guard down. That's the reality of spiritual warfare. The enemy often uses something in our lives to pull us off that mountaintop. Things like anxiety, anger, lust, and pride can give him power to drag you through the mud if you're not suited up!

The enemy hates you, hates the worship at church, hates the great message that moved you, hates your trip to the mountains that has the opportunity to change your life!

Our God is so big and powerful, and He's given you the strength to stand firm in His love, even when the enemy attacks. Spiritual warfare is real, but our God is bigger. Just remember to put on the armor He gave you!

It's more important than ever to live according to God's plan for us. That means daily devotion to the Lord, reading His Word like a treasure map, listening to Him, and obeying. It also means living life with your brothers and sisters, so they can help hold you accountable.

Reach out, be bold and courageous, leave that old you behind and shed that dead weight.

Thank you, Father, for one more day. Amen.

Ephesians 6:14-17

[14] Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. [15] For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared. [16] In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil. [17] Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
