The Power of Living a Life of Integrity in a Broken World

A clean white wrench lies on a rugged, oil-stained workbench surrounded by rusted, greasy tools. Bold text reads “Stand Clean” at the top and “In a Dirty World” at the bottom, symbolizing purity and integrity amidst corruption.
Even in the mess, you were made to stand out. Integrity isn’t about being perfect—it’s about choosing to stay clean when everything around you isn’t. Psalm 101 reminds us to live differently.

Psalm 101:3–5

“I will refuse to look at anything vile and vulgar. I hate all who deal crookedly; I will have nothing to do with them. I will reject perverse ideas and stay away from every evil. I will not tolerate people who slander their neighbors. I will not endure conceit and pride.”

As followers of Jesus, our lives are held to the highest standards. We're called to live a life that reflects Him—and that means living a life of integrity. We can’t claim to follow Christ and still live the old way. Everything from hate to worry has no place in our hearts anymore. This psalm is from David, and he’s laying down some serious standards for himself and the people he allows into his life.

We need to take the same position. As believers, we’re committed to living a life of integrity, which means we no longer have anything in common with those kinds of behaviors or lifestyles. We don’t lie, cheat, steal, or slander—so we can’t closely associate with people who make that their norm.

But if we find ourselves around them again, we should view it as an opportunity to reflect what living a life of integrity really looks like—to show them the fruit of a changed life.

As a mechanic, I know firsthand that it’s not always easy to speak about good things and ignore the dirty or inappropriate stuff. I’m not perfect—I’ve failed a few times. It happens. But because of what they’ve seen in me, my coworkers know I’m actively trying not to swear or participate in the negative conversations. That kind of intentional living constantly reminds me to be mindful of what I say and how I say it.

I’ve even noticed the guys around me catching themselves after they curse—and sometimes they’ll apologize. Not because I said anything, but simply from being around me. That’s not because of anything I’ve done, but because the Holy Spirit is at work—both in me and through me. It’s His power that gives me the strength to keep living a life of integrity, even when it’s tough.

And if God can use a lowly mechanic like me to shift the atmosphere in a greasy shop, I believe He can use anyone who’s willing.

Stand firm in the principles the Lord has given you. Put off the old life—the swearing, lying, cheating, and anything else that’s not from God. Living a life of integrity is a daily choice, but people will take notice. And over time, they’ll see that you’re serious and not turning back.

Not just by your words, but by your testimony—they’ll see the change. By living a life of integrity, you reflect the example we’ve been given in Jesus. Keep walking it out. He’s worth it.

Amen.

Psalm 101:1–2

“I will sing of your love and justice, Lord. I will praise you with songs. I will be careful to live a blameless life—when will you come to help me? I will lead a life of integrity in my own home.”
