“The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.” -Proverbs 18:21
Words carry weight. Today’s verse reminds us just how much. Whether we realize it or not, the power of words is a force we wield daily—building others up or tearing them down with a single sentence. In moments of frustration or anger, our tongue often moves faster than our heart, and we say things we later regret.
But before we speak, it’s worth asking:
Is it helpful?
Is it kind?
Does it inspire?
Does it glorify God?
If the answer to any of those is "no," maybe it’s worth hitting pause. I often think of this phrase: “A person that lives by their words will die by their words.” It’s a sobering truth about the power of words—what we speak can echo far beyond the moment.
James 1:19 reminds us:“Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.”There’s wisdom in silence and strength in waiting. When we lead with listening and guard our speech, we honor God and protect others from harm our words could cause.
Let today be a reminder:
Be encouraging.
Be kind.
Be helpful.
And always—always—seek to glorify God with your words.
Amen
