Work as Unto the Lord Colossians 3:23-24: Faithfulness in Thankless Jobs

A janitor in simple work clothes mops the floor of a dimly lit office. His face is lifted toward a glowing cross on the wall, smiling with peaceful encouragement as golden light shines on him. Shadowy figures of a boss and co-workers in the background remain uninterested, symbolizing earthly disregard, while the cross represents Christ’s presence and true reward.
“Even in the most thankless jobs, God sees your faithfulness. Work as unto the Lord – Colossians 3:23-24.”

Colossians 3:23-24

[23] Do your work willingly, as though you were serving the Lord himself, and not just your earthly master. [24] In fact, the Lord Christ is the one you are really serving, and you know he will reward you.

Work is tough for the majority of us. Some of you are blessed to actually enjoy your job, and if that’s you, I’m truly happy for you—because that is a gift from God. But if you’re like me, most of the jobs you’ve had have simply been work, not much joy.

That’s why these verses are such an encouragement. Work as unto the Lord Colossians 3:23-24 reminds us of our true mission. Working only to repay man will always be limited. Working just to impress a boss is also limited—because when your efforts go unnoticed, most people will stop trying or pull back.

But working to please the Lord? That’s a lifelong commitment. We can never repay what we owe Him, and He is the only One who truly sees your heart. Every time you work faithfully, even in a tough, thankless job, you are showing appreciation for His grace and love.

God is with you no matter where you work. He is pleased when you give your best willingly at whatever task is before you. This shows both your good heart and your Father’s love to people in places where they might not expect it. When you continue to work faithfully, your employer may notice and be impressed—or maybe not. If they don’t care, that’s their loss. The truth is, you may very well have been the best thing that ever happened in that workplace, and God will call you forward when it’s time to move on.

So stay faithful. Keep your eyes fixed on Christ. Remember the encouragement of Work as Unto the Lord Colossians 3:23-24—your true reward comes from Him, not from man.

Ephesians 2:8-10

[8] You were saved by faith in God, who treats us much better than we deserve. This is God's gift to you and not anything you have done on your own. [9] It isn't something you have earned, so there is nothing you can brag about. [10] God planned for us to do good things and to live as he has always wanted us to live. This is why he sent Christ to make us what we are.

Thank you, Father, for another day. Amen.
