A Man After God’s Heart Practices Giving with a Kingdom Mindset

A modest family sits together in a small living room at Christmastime, surrounding a tiny decorated tree. Despite having little, they joyfully assemble a small gift basket with canned goods and simple items to bless someone in need. Warm light fills the room as the daughter places a can into the basket, showing a spirit of generosity even in a difficult season. Text overlay reads, “When You Don’t Have Much… but You Still Choose to Give.”
Even in a season of scarcity, this family chooses generosity over longing. Their Christmas may be small, but their faith is big—reminding us that true giving isn’t measured by what we have, but by the heart we offer it with.

Luke 21:3–4

[3] “I tell you the truth,” Jesus said, “this poor widow has given more than all the rest of them.[4] For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she is, has given everything she has.”

Giving. These verses are an amazing example of what the Lord cares about most. This poor widow—someone who clearly could have used a little charity herself—is giving everything she had. This is backwards by the world’s standards! People go to church to get help, to get financial assistance, to eat the meals they provide.

We say things like:“Once we get back on our feet, we can start giving.”“I need to get that new job; then I’ll make enough to give back.”

But if these were biblically sound reasons for holding back, then why was this poor widow praised for giving all she had? Surely someone reached back into the collection box and handed her the money back!

No. That tiny offering—insignificant to men but honoring to God—stayed there, and her faith was strengthened. She made the decision to see life through the eyes the Lord offered her. Eyes shaped by Giving with a Kingdom Mindset. Eyes that see past her needs, past the hurt, past the rejection, past the fear of what tomorrow will bring.

She sees her offering as following her convictions and living according to the example Jesus gave—being Kingdom minded. She understood something we often forget: the true value of money is in our ability to give it and use it to expand the Kingdom. Outside of that, it’s meaningless. Not one thought will be given to our earthly toys, houses, or accomplishments when we stand in paradise with our Heavenly Father.

This perspective teaches us that the hope we cling to—the hope of joining Jesus in heaven—is what we need to share. That’s what’s truly valuable. That’s what’s truly meaningful. That is Giving with a Kingdom Mindset.

So when you give, give generously and do it with a joyful heart. The Lord promises to bless us in return. This season, when you give, follow your convictions. Give generously no matter your financial situation. Let your faith be strengthened by trusting your Heavenly Father to provide for you when you’re obedient.

Thank you Father for another day. Amen.

Galatians 6:8–10

[8] Those who live only to satisfy their own sinful nature will harvest decay and death from that sinful nature. But those who live to please the Spirit will harvest everlasting life from the Spirit.[9] So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.[10] Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should…
