Jonah 1:1–3
The Lord gave this message to Jonah son of Amittai: “Get up and go to the great city of Nineveh. Announce my judgment against it because I have seen how wicked its people are.” But Jonah got up and went in the opposite direction to get away from the Lord. He went down to the port of Joppa, where he found a ship leaving for Tarshish. He bought a ticket and went on board, hoping to escape from the Lord by sailing to Tarshish.
Jonah is such an interesting character. It honestly makes me laugh every time I read the part about him trying to run from God. Let’s be real—you can’t outrun the Creator. He sees everything, and He knew Jonah's heart before he even set foot on that boat.
Now, put your own name in Jonah’s place. How often have you done the same—gone the opposite way, thinking you knew better than God? Maybe you didn’t realize it at the time, but later you saw it clearly: you had completely disregarded what God was asking of you.
In Jonah’s case, Nineveh was the last place he wanted to go. It was full of wickedness, and Jonah knew that if the people repented, God would forgive them. That bothered Jonah. It was like, “What’s the point of warning them if You’re going to show mercy?”
But that’s the heart of God—He is merciful. And that’s where trusting God’s plan becomes essential. His ways are not our ways. His thoughts are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8–9). And yes, sometimes that’s frustrating.
When we don’t understand what He’s doing, we’re still called to trust Him. When others receive grace we think they don’t deserve, we’re called to trust Him. When the road doesn’t make sense, and the direction feels backward, we must still trust that God knows what we don’t.
We are all in need of God’s mercy—over and over again. Let’s not lose sight of who we are and the One we serve. Like Jonah, we need a moment of truth, a return to reality, and a surrender to the only path that truly leads to life: God’s will.
Outside of that will? That’s where the “big scary fish” live—waiting to get our attention.
Stay strong, friends. Even when it doesn’t make sense, especially when it’s hard, hold tightly to your faith. Trusting God’s plan is never the wrong move.
Jonah 1:15–17
Then the sailors picked Jonah up and threw him into the raging sea, and the storm stopped at once! The sailors were awestruck by the Lord’s great power, and they offered Him a sacrifice and vowed to serve Him. Now the Lord had arranged for a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was inside the fish for three days and three nights.
