Psalms 91:1-7
[1] Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. [2] I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” [3] Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. [4] He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. [5] You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, [6] nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. [7] A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you.
Faithful.
Today I woke up feeling a little depressed. My situation isn’t really changing, and time is flying by as usual. This feeling comes up because I don’t know what’s next or when it will happen, and in the meantime I’m just sitting here waiting and trying to be obedient.
That feeling stuck with me for a bit. Sitting on the edge of my bed, feeling unhealthy, frustrated, and wondering why I wake up this early and get ready like something is going to happen.
Heading downstairs, I get a fresh pot of coffee going, sit in my spot, turn on my worship music, and start to pray.
I start out by thanking God for all the things we made it through yesterday without problem—safe travels, no injuries, we still had food, and as usual, the day flew by.
In that moment, my depression started to lift. My eyes were lifted from my situation to my Lord. I was reminded again: God is my refuge and fortress, not my circumstances.
After my prayer, I opened my Bible and continued reading Joshua, then jumped over into Psalms. I encountered nothing but encouragement in everything I read.
Joshua defeated all those kings and their soldiers at the command of God because he surrendered to His will. He obeyed. God showed up faithfully when Joshua was obedient.
That was my takeaway.
Looking back, I can see that God has protected and provided for us faithfully. My obedience and surrender are what He wants, and that is how we make it through. God is my refuge and fortress, and He will show up faithfully.
We are protected under His mighty wings. When it feels like death and destruction are at my side, I will rest in His promises, knowing God is my refuge and fortress even here.
I know a lot of you are going through your own hardship. I share these updates at the direction of the Lord to hopefully encourage you and help shift your focus. My life is an open book, and maybe something I go through or learn can save you some downtime.
That’s exactly what depression does—it takes you out of the fight.
Getting back up, drawing your sword, and knowing God is faithful—that He will shield you with His wings—is how you climb out of this pit.
Rest in the shadow of your Almighty Father.
Thank you, Father, for one more day. Amen.
Psalms 91:9-15
[9] If you say, “The Lord is my refuge,” and you make the Most High your dwelling, [10] no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent. [11] For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; [12] they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. [13] You will tread on the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. [14] “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. [15] He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him.
