God’s Men Give Freely: Learning to Trust the Giver, Not the Gift

Compassion begins the moment we stop walking past and start seeing people the way God does.

Proverbs 19:17

Caring for the poor is lending to the Lord, and you will be well repaid.

There are so many hang-ups in our minds about giving to the poor. A lot of them, I’ve discovered, are passed down from our parents or the environments we grew up in. I was raised in a home that didn’t give to certain people who begged. I almost developed a disdain for the homeless or anyone who dared to ask me for my hard-earned money. “Get a job!” “Take care of yourself!” I used to think.

Not very encouraging or helpful. In fact, it was shameful—and not the action of a believer.

At a later point in my life, the Lord broke me of this behavior. It started when He showed me the truth: How dare I take ownership of my Father’s money and then withhold it from someone in need? That realization cut deep. Everything I had, every paycheck, every possession—it all belonged to God. I was simply a steward.

Since that day, I’ve chosen to repent and give freely—just as the Lord commands.God understands that giving to the poor is a challenge for many of us. Pride, fear, and control often stand in the way. But He also calls us to grow beyond that. He wants us to learn to trust the Giver, not the gift.

When we give freely, we acknowledge that everything we have comes from Him. It’s not about losing something—it’s about releasing what was never ours to begin with. The blessings come in ways we might not see right away, but God is always faithful.

Be intentional about working through this area of your heart. Remember whose money it truly is, what your purpose is with it, and how giving to the poor reflects your faith in action.

Luke 14:13–14

When you give a feast, invite the poor, the paralyzed, the lame, and the blind. They cannot pay you back. But God will bless you and reward you when His people rise from death.

Brothers, the world teaches us to hold tight to what we earn. But God teaches us to open our hands and trust Him with what’s in them. When we do, we find that His rewards far outweigh anything money can buy.

Have faith. Give freely. And trust the Giver, not the gift. Amen.
