2 John 1:5-6
[5] I am writing to remind you, dear friends, that we should love one another. This is not a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning. [6] Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning.
I sometimes wonder why love comes up so often in messages from the Lord. Is it because it’s that important, or maybe because we’re not so good at practicing it? Probably both, right?
What we’ve learned from studying God’s word is that to love one another is one of the most important things we’re called to do. It’s not just about my wife, my kids, my mom, or my siblings — it’s about loving EVERYONE.
That person in your life causing a headache.
The jerk that cut you off on the way to church.
The guy that cut in line at Taco Bell.
The person out front of Target asking you to sign a petition for something you don’t believe is right.
Each one of these people is deserving of God’s love through YOU. Yes, you are the one that is supposed to show them! Everyone is loved by God and has a purpose in His kingdom. You are supposed to reach them through your loving response.
In moments of frustration or anger, our sinful nature takes over and wants to clobber them.
Especially at Taco Bell — that’s just unacceptable.
Seriously, though, God’s command to love one another is unlimited, just like our Heavenly Father. There is no beginning and no end and no depth and no width. It goes against all of the training the world has given us.
The world often says there are limits to love. To me, that means there’s a point where I feel I’m actually better than them. But from God’s perspective, we all fall short of His standard. It’s only through His loving sacrifice that we’re given the chance to join Him in paradise.
Loving the people closest to you is easier, even though that can sometimes be difficult too. But intentionally making love your response when you are around other people will make a difference. People will see God in your commitment to love one another and let His love flow through you.
Thank you, Father, for one more day. Amen.
Luke 6:35-36
[35] “Love your enemies! Do good to them. Lend to them without expecting to be repaid. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to those who are unthankful and wicked. [36] You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate.
