Spiritual Complacency Is Killing the Church

Revelation 3:17-18
[17] You say, ‘I am rich. I have everything I want. I don’t need a thing!’ And you don’t realize that you are wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked. [18] So I advise you to buy gold from me—gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see.
During my morning prayer, I was asking the Lord about comfort and what it looked like in certain situations. After praying, I felt led to open 2 Corinthians, and He answered my question and gave me a new understanding. So, this morning is starting off awesome right away!
During this time, I had the book of Revelation on my mind and felt led to read it. Turning to Revelation, I read the first three chapters, and then, like a smack in the face, I saw what the Lord wanted me to see.
Complacency is killing the church.
People are more comfortable in church now than ever, and the comfort they have is not from God. They sit comfortably because they have everything they want: money, clothes, and a shallow understanding of God's Word. Spiritual complacency can convince us that because we have what we need and life feels comfortable, we must be doing just fine.
What the Lord is doing in these verses is using objects they—and we—are familiar with to make a point.
"Buy gold from Me, gold that has been purified by fire."
This is an invitation to take His hand and live the life He desires for you: a life of faith tested and proven by trials that will refine you and your faith into something more valuable than money.
"Also buy white garments from Me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness."
A pure and righteous life is a life that resists lust and our natural desires for self-gratification. No amount of money or possessions covers sin from our Father. We need to throw off this worldly "black wool" and seek His approval by putting on His gift of shameless white garments.
"Ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see."
Open your eyes to your spiritual poverty. Being spiritually blind is thinking you're successful because of your accomplishments. Let the Lord lead you into the understanding that success is found only in a life of obedience to God. Spiritual complacency keeps us satisfied with what the world calls success while remaining blind to what has eternal value.
Lastly, all of these things appear extremely expensive! The reality is, the alternative is fragile and fleeting at best. Choosing God's path costs you your false sense of security, your pride, your accomplishments, your possessions, and, most importantly, requires your surrender to seeking Him above all else.
The reward for a life lived surrendered to God is resilience, peace, and an unshakable identity rooted in the God of the universe. Oh, and don't forget, a "well done, my good and faithful servant" as we enter the paradise of being with God forever.
Fix your sights on the Lord and let Him lead you out of spiritual complacency and into a fulfilling life that has eternal value.

[19] I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference. [20] “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. [21] Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne.
