Teaching Your Children About God Starts With How You Live

A split-scene image showing a father teaching his child from the Bible on one side, while on the other side he is distracted by his phone as the child watches, illustrating how teaching your children about God is shaped by what they see, not just what they hear.
What you model daily will speak louder than anything you say—your children are learning your faith by watching your life.

Deuteronomy 11:19–21

[19] Teach them to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. [20] Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, [21] so that as long as the sky remains above the earth, you and your children may flourish in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors.

My focus has really shifted in the past couple of months. I went from focusing on my work and my ministry there, to having all of that taken away and being presented with an opportunity to focus on the basics. Things like my relationship with my wife and our two kids.

It felt like a setback at first, but now I see it as a blessing—and a chance to really build something better with them and help them see what truly matters. I’ve realized that teaching your children about God isn’t just something you say—it’s something they see every day in how you live.

At some point in our lives, the Lord may come in and mix things up. At first it may feel devastating and cause worry, but it has a purpose. Our job is to recognize the opportunities it creates.

The Lord leads me all over the place in the Bible, and it's awesome every time.

This morning when I woke up, my thought immediately went to “legacy.” Like—what am I leaving my kids? What would they see if my whole life was put on paper? What would they remember or take away from our time together?

I know… way too heavy for that early in the morning.

But after sitting with it and praying, my hope is that my life is proof that God loves and saves all who believe and follow Him. Evidence that God still performs miracles, and that faith in Him is what truly gives life purpose.

I hope my example shows them what teaching your children about God really looks like—prioritizing obedience and faith, and finding joy in remembering all the ways He provides and remains faithful.

As followers of God, our whole life should be about Him. Everything we achieve or overcome should always point back to God, recognizing that He’s the one who gives us strength and helps us through it all.

It’s because of Him we overcome.

It’s because of Him we have purpose.

It’s because of Him we can give the next generation hope.

And in that, we’re teaching your children about God in a way they’ll never forget.

Thank you, Father, for one more day. Amen.

Psalms 78:4–7

[4] We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders. [5] For he issued his laws to Jacob; he gave his instructions to Israel. He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children, [6] so the next generation might know them—even the children not yet born—and they in turn will teach their own children. [7] So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles and obeying his commands.
