The Fight for Christian Humility When Your Pride Wants the Wheel

A man sits at a wooden table with his Bible open, pausing in deep prayer before responding to a text on his phone, symbolizing Christian humility and seeking God before reacting.
Christian humility begins in the quiet pause—where we stop reacting, seek God first, and let Him lead our response.

Romans 12:3

Because of the privilege and authority God has given me, I give each of you this warning: Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourselves, measuring yourselves by the faith God has given us.

This one is tough. Pride is serious and needs to be handled seriously. Being honest enough to see where we stack up on the pride scale is a major part of Christian humility — and it reveals our true character. We’ve all encountered pride before. You’re talking with someone, and it feels as if they think their ideas are always better, their accomplishments are always better, and even if you did the same thing, theirs somehow outshines yours. Those are the obvious signs.

But here are the ones that slip under the radar.

Feeling like your own understanding and wisdom are enough to make a big decision on your own.Not seeking God every day — because the only reason we wouldn’t is if we felt we didn’t need Him that day. Ouch.Believing you are wise and powerful without acknowledging where those gifts came from.

This is where Christian humility becomes essential. It keeps us grounded. It reminds us of our role and our place. All good things come from God. So if there is something you can boast about, boast about the Lord’s blessings and His grace. Pride has no place in a life that wants to honor God. It’s not useful, except to teach you hard, painful lessons. But humility — real Christian humility — is Christlike. It deflects attention, redirects praise, and points all glory back to the King.

Never become so prideful that you think you don’t need God involved in a decision. Follow your convictions, and if you feel the tug to pray over something, do it. That tug is God trying to slow you down.

I’ll admit it — praying over something slows the process. It takes longer than me just deciding and moving forward. But that’s the purpose. It forces you to stop long enough to feel the Lord leading you. I can honestly say that the times I waited, things worked out better. And the times I didn’t, I sometimes really regretted it.

Christian humility keeps you from rushing ahead and reminds you of your position in God’s family. It’s not weakness — it’s wisdom.

Be humble and remember your position in this family.

Thank You, Father, for one more day. Amen.

Romans 12:4–6

[4] Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, [5] so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other. [6] In his grace, God has given us different gifts for doing certain things well. So if God has given you the ability to prophesy, speak out with as much faith as God has given you.
