Trust in the Lord Even When You’ve Been Let Down

A weary man walks alone down a muddy path transitioning from darkness into warm light as reminders of betrayal, broken trust, and disappointment fade behind him. Ahead, a glowing cross stands on the horizon while an open Bible rests beside the path, symbolizing hope and trusting God after being let down.
People may fail you. Plans may fail you. But God never will. When trust is broken, let your hope lead you back to Him.

Psalms 33:17-22

17] Don’t count on your warhorse to give you victory— for all its strength, it cannot save you. [18] But the Lord watches over those who fear him, those who rely on his unfailing love. [19] He rescues them from death and keeps them alive in times of famine. [20] We put our hope in the Lord. He is our help and our shield. [21] In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name. [22] Let your unfailing love surround us, Lord, for our hope is in you alone.

I'm sure you are like me and have been let down more times than you can count. In fact, after a while it stopped being painful, most of the time, because I almost expected it.

People will let you down, and that includes everything they plan or do. Plans fail all the time.

"I am going to start this new whiz-bang diet that will drop 100 pounds in a couple of months. That ripped guy on social media said it worked for him!"

"I have it all set. At this rate I should be able to retire at 50!"

Believe it or not, I had a plan like that at one point. Here I am about five years from 50, and you all know my story.

The list goes on and on.

The reality is we are also part of that group of people who have let others down or made plans that failed. We could get into a seemingly endless search for the meaning behind failed plans, but if I am honest, most of my failed plans were

built under my own power and understanding.

What I feel the Lord is leading us toward is a question:

What or who are we truly relying on in times of decision-making, hardships, and life's direction?

That is not an easy question.

We all have this picture in our minds of the perfect Christian response to hardship, but living that out is something completely different. In the heat of battle, when we're getting our butts handed to us, it becomes incredibly difficult to remember who we're fighting with.

Like we talked about yesterday, this is a learned trait. It isn't something we are born with. It isn't something we are simply given. Learning to trust in the Lord often starts with one major step of faith.

Relying on God is our only answer in every situation we face.

He does not, will not, and cannot let us down.

Maybe your life so far has made trusting difficult. God knows that, and believe me when I say this: He will meet you exactly where you are. We simply need to discover what fully trusting Him actually looks like in our lives.

Some of you know this and live this, but there are still situations where, for some odd reason, we convince ourselves that we need to shoulder this one alone.

It's almost like pushing Jesus aside and saying:

"This is serious. I will handle it."

Then we fumble the ball, end up stressed out, exhausted, and crying like little babies.

God is worthy of your trust.

That sounds wild to say because if we are honest, most of us still struggle to fully trust in the Lord. More often than not, we trust our own way.

Maybe today is simply about letting go.

Let go and let God.

Today, maybe the question isn't whether God can be trusted.

Maybe the question is:

Are we finally ready to trust in the Lord with the things we've been holding onto ourselves?

Thank you, Father, for one more day. Amen.

Jeremiah 17:5-7

[5] This is what the Lord says: “Cursed are those who put their trust in mere humans, who rely on human strength and turn their hearts away from the Lord. [6] They are like stunted shrubs in the desert, with no hope for the future. They will live in the barren wilderness, in an uninhabited salty land. [7] “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.
