Trusting God in Difficult Times: Hope from Psalm 3:2-3

Digital painting of a man kneeling in prayer with his head bowed. A glowing shield with a cross surrounds him while a golden hand gently lifts his chin upward. Light breaks through dark storm clouds in the background, symbolizing Psalm 3:2-3 — God as a shield and the lifter of our head.
Even in the darkest storms, the Lord is our shield and the lifter of our head. 🙏✨ Trusting God in difficult times — Psalm 3:2-3

Psalm 3:2-3

[ 2]So many are saying, “God will never rescue him!”[3] But you, O Lord, are a shield around me; you are my glory, the one who holds my head high.

I have been in some situations that felt pretty hopeless. I’m sure you have too. Situations that, from the outside looking in, seemed impossible to get out of. The hole was too deep. The waves too strong. The walls too high. Who could ever rescue us from that?

David knew what it was like to hear the voices of doubt around him: “God will never rescue him!” Yet his confidence rested in the Lord alone. That’s the heart of trusting God in difficult times Psalm 3:2-3 reveals — God is our shield, our protector, the one who lifts our head when we feel crushed by fear.

The people watching David thought his story was over. But David was used to being underestimated. He had a history with God that gave him boldness others couldn’t understand. He faced literal giants and saw God deliver him. He remembered that victory every time the next trial came.

We have the same opportunity David had: to build our own history with the Lord. Every time we say “yes” to obeying God, even when it’s hard, our faith grows. That first step of faith is where most of the training happens. And after a few times of saying yes, you begin to realize — there’s no downside. God is always faithful to meet you right where you step.

Soon, you’re not relying on your own strength but on the confidence that comes from seeing God work before. You remember that the difficulty wasn’t because God wanted it to be hard — it was because of your fears, insecurities, and misplaced desires standing in the way. When surrendered, those obstacles fall, and you discover the peace of trusting God in difficult times Psalm 3:2-3 points us toward.

Psalm 3:4-6

[4] I cried out to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy mountain. Interlude[5] I lay down and slept, yet I woke up in safety, for the Lord was watching over me.[6] I am not afraid of ten thousand enemies who surround me on every side.

This is the fruit of trust: crying out to the Lord and knowing He answers. Resting in His care and sleeping in safety. Standing unshaken even when enemies surround you. That’s the hope David held on to — and it’s the same hope you and I can walk in today.

Take that step of faith. Surrender your fears. Trust God’s plan. Because in every difficult time, Psalm 3:2-3 reminds us — the Lord is our shield and the lifter of our head.

Amen.
