Ephesians 2:8-10
[8] God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. [9] Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. [10] For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
Masterpiece.
That is not how I would have described myself in the past. In fact, it would have been the complete opposite. During my journey as a follower of the Lord, one of the most difficult things was changing how I saw myself. As a kid, I was taught to focus on the things I didn’t like and the negative things by people who were supposed to make me feel accepted and safe. By the grace of God, I do not hold bitterness or grudges, but I did need healing.
Looking back at my life as a young man, I can see that ugliness tainting every relationship and interaction. It pushed people away and changed the course of my life. Now I see why. The Lord brought me through that, and it is now being used to strengthen my marriage and teach my children to avoid that path by being the type of support I didn’t have.
Your life’s path, as you look back, is unchangeable. As a follower of the Lord, that path — as bad or distant as it was — is still usable for good. God’s mercy and forgiveness are so powerful that they can usher us out of hurt and resentment and into freedom. That is part of realizing you are God’s masterpiece, even after the pain.
Resentment and pain together create bondage.
Bondage keeps us locked in those bad moments that bleed over into everything we do, with no escape.
Through understanding God’s perfect love and acceptance of the things we cannot change, we can now move powerfully into the realization that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
We begin to understand that you are God’s masterpiece, created with purpose and loved far more deeply than we realize.
There is a purpose to all of it.
God will show you how this pain can be used to walk in your calling and expand the Kingdom of Heaven. Sometimes the greatest healing comes when we finally accept that you are God’s masterpiece and that God can redeem every broken part of your story for His glory.
Thank you, Father, for one more day. Amen.
Psalms 139:13-14
[13] You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. [14] Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.
