Finding God’s Mercy When You Feel Unworthy

A man sits on the floor in a dark room with his head in his hands, overwhelmed and ashamed, while a warm beam of light shines down and a glowing hand reaches toward him from above, symbolizing God’s mercy reaching into shame.
When shame says you’re disqualified, mercy reminds you that you were never saved by worthiness — only by grace.

Romans 7:15

“I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.”

Forgiveness.

We all fall short of the glory of God. Do you have a sin that is a habitual failure for you? I know I do. Just as we see Paul describe in Romans 7, as a follower of the Lord I know it’s wrong — and yet I still fall short. Regularly.

It’s discouraging. It’s shameful. It can make me feel like a failure… like a bad husband and father.

Why can’t I just move past this and forget about it?

In those low moments, the enemy attacks and fills my head with every terrible thought you can imagine. The goal is to get me to believe I am worthless — that I will never overcome this sin — that it must be unforgivable, so I might as well just stay in it.

“You are not worthy of God’s grace and forgiveness. Just accept that and let go.”

You know what, Satan? You’re right.

I have never been worthy of God’s grace and forgiveness — and that’s the point. It can only be grace if it’s given to the unworthy. God’s mercy when you feel unworthy has nothing to do with how good I am; it has everything to do with how good He is.

There is no depth you can sink to.

There is no distance you can run.

There is no failure too repeated.

His grace and love can still reach you.

That truth is the foundation of finding God’s mercy when you feel unworthy. Not because you earned it. Not because you finally “fixed” yourself. But because His character never changes.

Let that understanding make you bold and honest in assessing your sin. We receive grace when we repent and confess. Why live chained to what Jesus already paid for? He made a way for us to be whole and right in the eyes of God.

And even now — in the middle of the struggle — God’s mercy when you feel unworthy is still enough.

God’s grace is enough.

God’s forgiveness is enough.

You are enough — because He says you are.

It’s time to live like it.

Thank You, Father, for one more day. Amen.

Psalm 103:1–5

“Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name. Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. He forgives all my sins and heals all my diseases. He redeems me from death and crowns me with love and tender mercies. He fills my life with good things. My youth is renewed like the eagle’s!”
