Freedom from Fear Through Surrender to God Changes You, Not Always the Situation

A rugged man sits on a rocky shoreline during a violent storm, waves crashing and lightning striking in the background. A glowing cross shines on a hill behind him while a lantern and open Bible rest nearby, symbolizing freedom from fear through surrender to God even when the storm remains.
The storm didn’t move.  God strengthened the man standing in it.

Psalm 34:4–5

“I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me. He freed me from all my fears. Those who look to him for help will be radiant with joy; no shadow of shame will darken their faces.”

Fear.

“Look to Him for help.” As you can read in this verse, David takes a proactive approach to his faith. He isn’t just sitting back crying out, “God save me!” or “God hear me!”

At the first sight of a problem or monster, his intentional prayer and seeking God is where deliverance comes from—not panic, anger, or distress.

When I read this version, something caught my eye. David says the Lord freed him from all his fears. I believe this is rooted in understanding that God doesn’t always remove us from the situation. Instead, He strengthens us in it. That’s been my history with our Father. Most of my situations don’t improve overnight—I get stronger. My outlook changes. My hope is renewed.

That’s what freedom from fear through surrender to God has looked like in my life. The circumstance may stay, but the fear loses its grip.

Now, I have experienced miraculous restoration. I’ve seen problems resolved in ways only He could orchestrate. I know our Father can do either. But I also understand there are lessons to learn and muscles to build. Sometimes He’s growing me more than He’s changing the storm.

In the freedom provided by our Father’s love, when we seek Him, we are freed from the emotional and mental chains that come with those monsters that pop out of nowhere. Real freedom from fear through surrender to God only happens when we completely trust His plan—believing He is good, His plan is good, and choosing to rest in that truth.

Letting go.

Giving up control.

Dying to our worldly pursuits.

Death to our fleshly dreams. Let that ugly monster of desire, lust, jealousy, and greed die a horrible death. Those things are anchors. At best, they slow you down. At worst, they keep you stuck.

And underneath so many of those struggles? Fear.

Fear of not having enough money.

Fear of rejection.

Fear of not being respected.

Slippery slopes into darkness.

But when we look to Him—really look to Him—we become radiant, not because life is easy, but because we are no longer owned by fear. Freedom from fear through surrender to God changes you, not always the situation.

And that changes everything.

I pray that the Lord frees you from your fears as you learn to trust His plan for your life.

Thank you, Father, for one more day.

Amen.

Psalm 23:4–6

“Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.”
