How to Trust God When Everything Seems Like It Is Falling Apart

Split image of the same man sitting at a desk—one side shows him overwhelmed by bills and stress in dark lighting, while the other shows him calmly praying in warm light, representing trust in God during difficult times.
Everything around me says panic… but I’m learning how to trust God when everything seems like it is falling apart.

Matthew 10:38-39

[38] If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. [39] If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it.

Sacrifice.

I know quite a few people who have a difficult life; it looks like they just can't get ahead. It can be painful to see. Their friends want them to be rich, with a big house and new cars.

Some of them want and pray for that exact thing. While others somehow thank God for what they have and ask for the courage and strength to continue down this path.

These people amaze and encourage me. They see something most do not. They are not focused on their "quality of life" according to what people think they should have. They understand that their sacrifice is not unseen. Our Father knows that having little or nothing is a hardship.

Every day we are called to surrender to God's will by putting aside our fleshly desires and resting in His promises to provide for your needs. Dying to your selfish nature and surrendering to God's will is where your life truly begins. This is what it looks like when you are learning how to trust God when everything seems like it is falling apart—not when life is easy, but when it isn’t.

Your sacrifice teaches you that in tough life decisions, faith in Him makes them easier. Waiting for His provision when you see unpaid bills piling up becomes easier. Choosing God's commands over the pressure of this world to conform becomes easier.

Each of our crosses are different. Mine is fighting what I feel a man should be or do. Jobless, scarily low on money, with no way to pay the mortgage—these were things that would have absolutely destroyed the old me. I am here now by the grace of God, waiting patiently for His provision and direction. This season is teaching me, in real time, how to trust God when everything seems like it is falling apart.

Each day I wake up, fear creeps in.

Each time I walk by the desk and see bills, fear creeps.

Each time I look into my wife's crying eyes, fear creeps in.

Each day I pray, I ask God to help me shoulder that cross, and thank Him I’m still here—that my life may be used to encourage or deepen a brother or sister's relationship with God. In this ministry the Lord gave me, I've always had the understanding that if my words even cause one person to open their Bible and seek answers, it's a success. Even if it's because I said something incorrectly. All glory to God. I am just a feeble mechanic.

No matter what your cross is, you never shoulder it alone. You are never alone in this walk. Your Father will provide. Even when everything seems like it is falling apart, He is still working, still present, still faithful.

Your sacrifice will not be in vain.

2 Timothy 4:7-8

[7] I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. [8] And now the prize awaits me—the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.
