The Great Commission isn’t a moment—it’s your everyday life

Matthew 28:18-20
[18] Jesus came and told his disciples, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. [19] Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. [20] Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Go.
Good Friday and Easter are a beautiful time for a follower of the Lord. Remembering His sacrifice and the fulfillment of God’s plan is amazing and reassuring. As we see in Matthew 28:18-20, Jesus gives His final command to the disciples: “Go! And make disciples of all the nations.” This is what we know as The Great Commission.
This isn’t a one-time command. The disciples didn’t make a world tour, then retire and take it easy. The Great Commission means to continually seek out and make new disciples daily. The beautiful thing is that disciples are made in our everyday life. Work, shopping, gas stations, coffee shops—even in our friendships—the opportunity is there.
A disciple is someone hungry to learn and lives by the Lord’s example, not just a believer. This type of disciple is made by your example and by seeing the difference in the way you interact with the world. We all know by now that there needs to be, and should be, a difference. How can we rescue someone from their life of meaninglessness if we look just like they do?
This is, and always will be, a lead-by-example faith. The Great Commission is lived out long before it’s ever spoken. Your good example will save people. Your kind words, your smile, your forgiveness, your willingness to be “slow to get angry” will show that there is substance to this life of a follower of the Lord.
I know it’s a lot. The Lord knows it’s a lot. Every day we need to be ready. Every day we will get an opportunity—even if we don’t realize it. This is where the Father’s love flowing through you will make all the difference. It will remind you that the lost are loved just as you are, and therefore deserve and need your love.
Believing that is what will strengthen you and keep you in the fight daily. That’s how you live out The Great Commission in real life.
Time to GO!
Thank you, Father, for one more day. Amen.
John 13:34-35
[34] So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. [35] Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
