Psalms 34:18
The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.
Sometimes, as humans, we just want to be alone. Depression can come out of nowhere, and suddenly all we want is to lie down or escape—maybe even go on a vacation by ourselves. In those moments, it feels like no one is capable of helping, and truthfully, we may not even want help. In depression, we are vulnerable, and the enemy knows it. He loves it when we isolate ourselves, because in that silence, his voice gets louder. He whispers lies, fuels our desire to escape, and leads us toward destruction and pain—broken hearts, damaged relationships, and hopelessness.
It can get ugly quickly. Sometimes that ugliness snaps us awake; other times, it pushes us deeper into the darkness. But the good news is this: The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, even when we can’t feel His presence.
In my own experience, depression often comes from two places—the past we can’t change or the present we feel powerless to change. It can stem from physical limitations, disease, a painful childhood, or past abuse. Whatever the source, God has given us commands and scriptures to remind us of our value and purpose in Him. Those bad things do not decrease your worth—not even a little. In fact, when surrendered to Him, they can increase your effectiveness and reach for the Kingdom of God.
God sees your past, your present, and your future—the good and the bad intertwined—and still calls His plan perfect. Depression’s goal is to keep you from becoming the warrior He intended you to be. But The Lord is close to the brokenhearted, and He brings hope, healing, and purpose to every part of your story.
Rest in His promises. Trust that He brings purpose to your past and loves you completely. The all-knowing Creator of the universe looked at this world and decided it was incomplete without you in it.
Amen.
Matthew 11:28–30
Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. [29] Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [30] For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
