The More I Let Go, The More Contentment in God I Found

Man standing alone on an empty road with arms raised in surrender toward a bright cross-shaped light breaking through storm clouds while symbols of work, finances, success, and control lie scattered at his feet, representing finding contentment in God through surrender.
What if the thing stealing your peace is the thing you're refusing to surrender?

1 Timothy 6:6-8

[6] Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. [7] After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. [8] So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content.

When I read the Bible, I feel like there are a few different types of contentment, or at least different situations where contentment is crucial to our peace.

Contentment with our possessions.

Contentment with our circumstances.

Contentment with God's grace.

Contentment in His provision.

To me, each of them is different and requires a different form of surrender.

For example, my family is in a situation where we are relying on God's provision daily. Being in this position brings up all kinds of thoughts and feelings, but I've been forced to put all that aside and really think about what is happening.

My God is providing just as He promised He would.

My family can still drive places, we can still make dinner together, my wife can still buy seeds and tend to her ever-growing garden. In one hand, I could carry regret and shame over not fitting into the box of an ideal provider. In the other hand, I can recognize that the Lord is keeping His promise, and in trusting and relying on Him, I'm becoming more of a leader for my family than I ever could have been, even as a CEO of a billion-dollar company.

Acceptance of your situation and recognizing that God will do what He said He will do opens you up to finding true contentment in God.

Even in suffering, we can peacefully accept our situation because we know from our past experiences that God is for us.

This contentment is not simply a decision we make. It is learned over time through seeking a right relationship with our Father.

Peace in your situation only exists through surrendering to being used when, how, and where He wants, with the provisions He determines.

The only way is to surrender our plans, our wants, and our desires and give them up as a sacrifice to the Lord.

The less of me standing in the way, the better.

In my walk with the Lord, I've come to find that many hardships feel harder because I'm still holding onto what I once had or what I want to get back to.

That clash between my desires and the Lord's plan creates discontent, and out of the two, His plan is not changing.

Imagine that.

As hard as it may seem and as backward as it may feel, the more we let go of ourselves and our desires, the more peace and contentment in God we experience.

Maybe true contentment in God isn't found when everything goes according to plan.

Maybe it is found when we finally let go of ours.

Thank you, Father, for one more day. Amen.

2 Corinthians 12:8-10

[8] Three different times I begged the Lord to take it away. [9] Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me. [10] That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
