Trust God in the Storm Instead of Grabbing the Wheel

First-person view from inside a storm-tossed boat as outstretched hands reach toward a bright cross-shaped light breaking through dark clouds while waves crash around and the steering wheel remains untouched.
I can either fight the storm for control or reach for the One who controls it.

Matthew 8:23-26

[23] Then Jesus got into the boat and started across the lake with his disciples. [24] Suddenly, a fierce storm struck the lake, with waves breaking into the boat. But Jesus was sleeping. [25] The disciples went and woke him up, shouting, “Lord, save us! We’re going to drown!” [26] Jesus responded, “Why are you afraid? You have so little faith!” Then he got up and rebuked the wind and waves, and suddenly there was a great calm.

Trust God in the Storm Instead of Grabbing the Wheel

I've read this part of Matthew quite a bit over the years, and it wasn't until a few years ago that I really understood what it meant for me.

The boat is representing my life. The waves and the storm are my life's hardships. Thankfully, I know the Lord is in this boat with me, most of the time, at the helm. I'm working on that.

Jesus doesn't fear the waves. He doesn't worry that they are breaking into the boat and the water is up to our ankles. He knows who controls the storm, and because of that, He can rest peacefully. When we read this part of Matthew, it might be easy to say, "How can those ding dong disciples not have any faith when Jesus is right there with them in the boat?!" That is so lame.

I've done it, thinking I would have made a better decision in certain situations I've read about in the Bible.

This morning I read about David and Bathsheba. What an idiot! Letting lust and desire take control enough to make a mistake like that and then kill someone to cover it up? Like the God of the universe won't know.

How many times have we sinned this week and tried to cover it up, hide it, or let it go because it was unseen? Keep in mind that all sin is wicked in the sight of the Lord. Sin is anything that does not bring glory to God. That is a lot!

Our boats are sailing along, and the times we stay on course are when we get out of the way and let God take the wheel. Learning to trust God in the storm means remembering who is actually steering the boat.

When a storm hits, use the example Jesus gave us and rest because we know God is in control. If we jump up out of fear and grab the wheel from the Lord every time a storm hits, we will capsize or run aground.

That's not faith.

Real faith has an outward manifestation that looks like resting in His promises when the waves hit. To trust God in the storm means choosing faith when fear tells you to panic.

Do you trust God in the storm?

Thank you, Father, for one more day. Amen.

Jeremiah 17:7-8

[7] “But blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence. [8] They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit.
