Philippians 2:17–18, 27
“But I will rejoice even if I lose my life, pouring it out like a liquid offering to God, just like your faithful service is an offering to God. And I want all of you to share that joy. Yes, you should rejoice, and I will share your joy.”
Paul’s life was lived in service to others. He wanted us to understand that even if he were to lose his life, he would count it all joy. I’ve always been amazed reading how believers like Paul could praise God even in the face of death. Almost like they looked at it as an achievement. And in many ways—it is.
The reason they didn’t fear death or persecution is because their faith was fully placed in God alone. Is death frightening? Yes. Is death sad? Absolutely. Even Jesus wept when He felt the sorrow of Lazarus’s sisters.
But here’s the thing—the more we live tied to this world and cling to its values and priorities, the more death and hardship turn into despair. Without hope beyond this life, death becomes a terrifying unknown. Hardship without the hope of God’s promises becomes unbearable—because you’re trying to carry it alone.
The strength and hope that Paul and other believers had came from a deep trust in God’s promises. Faith that death is not the end. Faith that the grave has been defeated. That’s where real hope begins. And I don’t mean the kind of hope that says, “I hope I win the lottery,” but a confident expectation rooted in God’s unchanging character and His track record of keeping His promises.
It’s a sure thing.
With that perspective, hardships take on purpose. They become opportunities for growth—and they’ll be rewarded in Heaven when you’re walking in His plan. When God is at the helm, everything has meaning. There are answers. There’s peace. There’s purpose.
Praise God for defeating the grave!
1 Corinthians 15:55–57
“O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” For sin is the sting that results in death, and the law gives sin its power. But thank God! He gives us victory over sin and death through our Lord Jesus Christ.
