James 2:18 (NLT)
“Now someone may argue, ‘Some people have faith; others have good deeds.’ But I say, ‘How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.’”
I love how plainly James lays it out for us. Faith is the root of our belief in God. Without it, we cannot please Him. But what is it about faith that’s actually pleasing to God? Is it simply our public proclamation that we’ve changed? That we now follow Jesus? That we told our friends, family—or maybe even a few strangers?
That’s a good start—but that can’t be where it stops.
Just like everything else in life, there must be action. Words alone are shallow. They don’t carry much weight until they’re backed up by meaningful, helpful works. And when in doubt, look at the life of Jesus. He lived this truth perfectly—leading not just with words, but with love in action.
He showed people what true love looks like. He showed them the purpose they could find in a life devoted to following Him. We’ve already made the proclamation that we are believers. The real question now is: Will your actions support that?
If no one ever heard you say you were a Christian, would your life still point to Jesus?
We all have work to do, and we’re all at different stages in our walk with the Lord. So don’t compare yourself to others. This is all by the grace of God—lest anyone should boast.
Instead, focus on what the Lord is putting on your heart today. Maybe it's something connected to this very message. This is an easy area to slip up in. The world’s standards are low and convenient—but our Lord’s standards are high. And they can only be achieved through His strength, which we access when we step out in faith.
Let your life speak.
Let your actions proclaim your faith—boldly and clearly.
Live in such a way that no one ever needs to ask who you serve.
They’ll see it in all that you do.
Amen.
