When the Enemy Attacks Your Weak Points and You’re Caught Off Guard

1 Peter 5:8-9

[8] Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. [9] Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are.

Man sitting alone in a dimly lit living room at night looking at his phone while a Bible sits closed on the coffee table beside him, symbolizing spiritual attack and the need to stay alert.
The enemy rarely announces the attack — he just waits for your weak moment.

Attack.

Let me start off by saying I'm glad it's Monday. That should show what kind of weekend it was for me. My wife and daughter are in Vegas for a national competition, so my son and I have the whole house to ourselves. I started out optimistic but soon learned the enemy was lurking nearby.

I wanted to do a deep clean on our house since it's been let go for a while, and it was driving my wife and me crazy trying to find time to clean. One thing after another just kept ruining my plans. I didn't have any cleaning stuff in our entire house. I was positive we had everything we needed.

Then a shelf ripped out of a wall and brought big chunks of the drywall with it. Awesome!

On top of that, the enemy was hitting me at my weakest point: lust. My wife being gone just added to the intensity, and I was fighting for my life.

This is exactly how it feels when the enemy attacks your weak points. It’s rarely dramatic at first. It starts with inconvenience. Frustration. Isolation. A small crack in your routine. And before you know it, he’s pressing right where you’re most vulnerable.

The enemy is always lurking, and the mistake I made was not putting on my armor. The Lord gave me a beautiful suit of armor to protect me from these attacks, and there my armor sat on my armor stand.

1 Peter 5:8–9 tells us to stay alert because the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. He doesn’t wander aimlessly. He watches. He waits. He studies patterns. He looks for the one who stepped out without protection.

We think we have the plans, our weekend, or even the small project in front of us in the bag. But starting off on the wrong foot with just socks on is going to be a rough time. That’s what happens when the enemy attacks your weak points and we assume we’ll be fine without prayer, without the Word, without intentionally suiting up.

As soon as we wake, let’s suit up. Every day the enemy is waiting for the first one out without their protection.

Pray and seek the Lord’s direction for your day. Read His Word daily to increase your knowledge of God and His character so you're better equipped to fight doubt, lust, anger, pride, and so much more. The battle isn’t just about resisting sin in the moment — it’s about preparation before the moment ever comes.

2 Peter 1:3–4 reminds us that by His divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We are not under-equipped. We are not left defenseless. We have His promises. We have His Spirit. We have His strength.

So when the frustration builds, when the loneliness creeps in, when temptation presses harder than usual — remember: this is what it looks like when the enemy attacks your weak points. And it’s also the exact moment to stand firm.

In your low moments, rely on His promises that He will never give you more than you’re able to withstand, and He will never leave you or forsake you.

Thank you, Father, for one more day. Amen.

2 Peter 1:3-4

[3] By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. [4] And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.
