Psalm 139:23–24 (NLT)
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.”
Have you ever truly asked the Lord to search your heart?
It’s intimidating—because He’s going to find something.
This is God we’re talking about, and I know my motives fall short more often than I’d like to admit. Sometimes I do things begrudgingly. Sometimes I act irritated because I don’t see the point. And sometimes… I’m just not very nice. When I stop and take a step back and really look at my heart, I realize just how messy it can be.
That realization can feel discouraging, especially because we usually notice it after we’ve already made a mistake.
Yet as believers, we genuinely desire to obey and please the Lord. When we stumble, the Holy Spirit lovingly convicts us—not to shame us, but to guide us back to where we need to be. This is why we must continually ask God to search our heart, even when it’s uncomfortable.
Part of glorifying God is growth. And growth requires honesty—recognizing that there will always be work to do. Our intentions, desires, insecurities, worries, and fears need to be laid at His feet daily. When we ask God to search our heart, He faithfully points out what displeases Him and gently exposes hidden sins—things like pride, prejudice, misplaced priorities, or distorted perspectives.
This process is critical to spiritual growth.
King David understood this deeply. In Psalm 139, he invited God to examine his thoughts and ways so they could be dealt with and removed. He recognized that anxious thoughts offended God because they reveal a lack of trust and faith. In those moments, our focus shifts inward—toward ourselves and the cares of this world—instead of upward toward the One who sustains us.
Jesus reminds us: “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”
When we ask God to search our heart, we are choosing surrender over self-reliance. We are inviting Him to replace anxiety with trust and fear with faith.
I pray that you would give every burden to the Lord today. He will take care of you. He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.
Psalm 86:11–13 (NLT)
“Teach me your ways, O Lord, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you. With all my heart I will praise you, O Lord my God. I will give glory to your name forever, for your love for me is very great. You have rescued me from the depths of death.”
May we have the courage to ask God to search our heart—not just once, but daily—trusting that His conviction always leads us toward freedom, growth, and everlasting life.
