The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation When Comparison Tries to Steal My Confidence

Psalm 27:1–3
[1] The Lord is my light and my salvation—so why should I be afraid? The Lord is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?[2] When evil people come to devour me, when my enemies and foes attack me, they will stumble and fall.[3] Though a mighty army surrounds me, my heart will not be afraid. Even if I am attacked, I will remain confident.
This weekend my family and I traveled to Anaheim for a competition. My daughter was competing on two teams, and my wife is one of the head coaches for all the teams—so needless to say, it was a big deal. Countless hours of training, sacrifice, and perseverance had gone into preparing these girls to do their best and strive for first place.
As a dad, I have the privilege of sitting back and watching. These are young girls, and they dress according to what their parents allow. Some of what I see honestly makes me sad. It hurts to watch children being led down a path focused on appearance and material things. The enemy loves to use this.
Our kids see it too. Naturally, they begin to believe that this is the goal—that more freedom, more attention, or more possessions equal value. That mindset isn’t accidental. It’s an attack.
I see dads who are fit and well dressed, and moms who are fit and dressed to draw attention. And if I’m being honest, I don’t look like that—and my family doesn’t either. The enemy lives and thrives in comparison.
The moment I start feeling less because of how another dad looks or what someone else has, I’ve fallen into the enemy’s trap. It’s a slippery slope, and once comparison takes hold, it’s hard to silence.
That’s when the Lord reminded me of the truth: the Lord is my light and my salvation. My confidence doesn’t come from appearances, possessions, or how I measure up to others. My worth comes from Him alone.
Praise God that our value is found in Christ. He is the One who designed us exactly as we are—perfectly suited for the calling He has placed on our lives. Imagine a pot telling the potter He made a mistake. It sounds ridiculous, yet that’s exactly what comparison tempts us to believe.
This was a battle I faced yesterday, and the Lord graciously revealed the enemy’s plan. When you see someone with all the world’s toys, remember this: you possess something far more valuable than anything money can buy.
The Lord is my light and my salvation, and because of that, I can walk with confidence. Love openly. Share freely. Don’t allow worldly status, appearances, or material success to intimidate you. You are a child of the God of the universe, and He declares that you are exactly who He created you to be.
Psalm 27:6
[6] Then I will hold my head high above my enemies who surround me. At His sanctuary I will offer sacrifices with shouts of joy, singing and praising the Lord with music.
Thank You, Father, for another day. Amen.
