Giving Cheerfully and Trusting God When Resources Feel Tight

A warm, illustrated scene of a smiling man at a kitchen table offering a twenty-dollar bill to open hands across from him, with simple groceries and an open Bible nearby, symbolizing giving cheerfully and trusting God when resources feel tight.
When resources feel tight, faith doesn’t close its hand—it opens it. Giving cheerfully and trusting God means believing He can do more with what we release than we ever could by holding on.

2 Corinthians 9:6–7 (NLT)

[6] Remember this—a farmer who plants only a few seeds will get a small crop. But the one who plants generously will get a generous crop.[7] You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. “For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.”

Scatter those seeds.

This topic is always difficult—but it doesn’t have to be if we have the correct perspective. Money is tight for almost everyone I know, and that makes it difficult to give when it feels like we’re the ones who need to be given to.

Welcome to the backward way of a follower of Jesus.

Verse 6 reminds us that generously scattering the blessings we’ve been entrusted with will yield a generous blessing in return. But the first step in giving cheerfully and trusting God is asking ourselves an honest question: Do we truly trust that God will keep His promises, provide, and bless us?

If we trust God, the next step is understanding that what we have isn’t really ours. It has been given to us—placed in our hands for a season—until we are led to pass it on.

Some of the most generous people I know give while they’re in need themselves. They give with a smile, a hug, and praise God for using them to bless a friend. Their hearts are right with the Lord, and that kind of faith makes our Heavenly Father proud.

Choose what you can give—and give with a joyful heart.

That joy doesn’t come from forcing ourselves to feel happy about giving away what we think we need. True joy only exists in complete surrender to the understanding that we don’t own anything. We are simply stewards, charged with being faithful with what we’ve been given.

Whether you give your time, energy, money, or possessions, give like it will be restored each morning.

If you had a bank account that—no matter how much you gave away—was restored the next day, would that change how much you give? Of course it would. That’s the kind of faith Paul is pointing to here. It’s the faith behind giving cheerfully and trusting God even when resources feel tight.

Give knowing the Lord will take care of you.

Give knowing the blessings will come.

That kind of faith will be rewarded.

Thank You, Father, for one more day. Amen.

2 Corinthians 9:8–9 (NLT)

[8] And God will generously provide all you need. Then you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.[9] As the Scriptures say, “They share freely and give generously to the poor. Their good deeds will be remembered forever.”
