Overcoming Doubt in Faith When Life’s Mountains Feel Too Big

Mark 11:23
I tell you the truth, you can say to this mountain, ‘May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ and it will happen. But you must really believe it will happen and have no doubt in your heart.
Doubt.
Why do we doubt God? When we pray for God to help us in a trial, do we lose focus? The circumstances start to grow in our minds and suddenly look huge—like mountains standing in the way of our faith.
“We owe so much money; I don’t see how any of this will work out.”“I’ve felt sick for so long that I don’t know if I’ll ever be better.”
Those moments reveal how easily we allow circumstances to overshadow what we know to be true about our Heavenly Father. In those moments, are we struggling with overcoming doubt in faith? Are we doubting His goodness by holding on instead of letting go and fully trusting Him? I believe so.
Even doubting our own worthiness can reveal a misunderstanding of God’s character. We don’t need to be anything other than obedient and trusting in the Lord. Overcoming doubt in faith isn’t about proving ourselves—it’s about believing who God is and standing on His promises.
God wants us to bring all our questions and worries to Him so they can be exposed and defeated. When we bring them into the light and work through our doubts instead of hiding them, our faith grows stronger. This is part of the process of overcoming doubt in faith, not avoiding it.
Jesus corrected “little” faith, but He never stopped loving those who struggled with it.
Here’s encouragement for all of us: doubt is not necessarily the opposite of faith in the life of a follower of Jesus. Often, it’s a step along the path God has laid out for us. Honest questions brought to God are always met with His invitation to rest in His promises. Overcoming doubt in faith happens when we bring our questions to Him instead of walking away.
Doubt is meant to be worked through—not lived in.
Thank You, Father, for one more day.
Amen.
James 1:6
But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.
