Seeking God First in Daily Life: Leading Your Family Through the Chaos

Man praying over an open Bible at a kitchen table while children play and create chaos around him during a busy morning at home
In the middle of the noise, choose what matters most.

Matthew 6:33

[33] Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

Priority.

Seriously, it feels like every day starts late, or there’s always something that throws things off. Someone doesn’t want to wake up, breakfast turns into a whole ordeal… the struggle is real.

My mornings usually start the same way—I brew a pot of coffee, settle into my chair, and pray. Then I open my Bible and begin studying. As a dad, I want my kids to develop habits and routines that set them up for success. A routine where God and His Word come first. A life centered on seeking God first in daily life, not just fitting Him in when it’s convenient.

Honestly, one of my biggest struggles is keeping my head on straight and focusing on leading instead of reacting. It’s frustrating when you put things in place and they get ignored. But I’m reminded that by keeping my priorities straight, I’m teaching my kids how to do the same.

For me, spending time with God—reading His Word and listening—is number one. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing my son and daughter engage, listen, and participate in our morning devotion. As a man who follows God, what more could I ask for?

My encouragement to you is simple: start each day fresh. Give your best time and your most focused attention to the Lord. Read His Word expecting to hear from Him. When things get tough, go to Scripture for guidance and encouragement. That’s what seeking God first in daily life looks like—it’s intentional, it’s consistent, and it shapes everything else.

I truly believe that when we focus on the most important relationship in our lives, the rest begin to fall into place. It’s not easy—there will always be distractions pulling for your attention—but staying rooted in Him changes how you respond to everything else.

Your relationship with God has a direct impact on your day-to-day life. Make that your priority. Live it out. Lead by example.

And over time, you’ll see the blessing—not just in your life, but in the lives watching you.

Thank you, Father, for one more day. Amen.

Matthew 6:19-21

[19] “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. [20] Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. [21] Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.
