The Danger of Unchecked Sin in the Church and in Our Hearts

A dimly lit church interior with rows of wooden pews leading toward an illuminated cross at the altar. A large crack runs through the concrete floor from the foreground toward the front of the church, symbolizing spreading compromise. Soft light streams through stained glass, highlighting the fracture while the rest of the sanctuary remains in shadow. Text overlay reads: “Small Compromise. Spreading Consequences. The Danger of Unchecked Sin in the Church and in Our Hearts.”
What begins as a small compromise can quietly fracture the foundation. Unchecked sin doesn’t explode overnight — it spreads beneath the surface until the damage can no longer be ignored.

1 Corinthians 5:6 (NLT)

“Your boasting about this is terrible. Don’t you realize that this sin is like a little yeast that spreads through the whole batch of dough?”

The Lord brought me to this chapter today. It clearly shows us how contagious even a little bit of sin can be — and how we are meant to deal with it. Just a small amount can quickly contaminate the whole group. It is a warning against allowing sin to spread unchecked within our family or the church. This is exactly the danger of unchecked sin in the church and in our hearts.

Paul highlights the need for believers to actively remove sin from their lives, just as the Israelites purged leaven from their homes during the Passover. The Lord wants us to take our sin seriously. Not only does it hold us back and keep us from fully experiencing the life He has for us, but if left unchecked, it will infect others. It will continue to spread, and as we see in the verse, it can corrupt an entire church. That is the danger of unchecked sin in the church — it never stays isolated.

Part of our prayer life should be intentionally checking in and asking God, “What fault of mine do You want to work on today?” As humans, we always have sin to address. Pride seems to be one of the biggest blinders we can have.

Look at this Corinthian church. They were boasting about how well they were doing. Instead of mourning the presence of disgusting sin within their own congregation, they focused only on their success as individuals and as a church. Paul now writes that this pride is not good. It was causing them to ignore a sin that could end up infecting all of them.

He reminds them that a little leaven leavens the entire lump of dough.

As brothers and sisters, we are that lump.

And when even a little sin is left unchecked, the whole body feels it. That is the danger of unchecked sin in the church and in our hearts — it spreads quietly, but its impact is never small.

1 Corinthians 5:10-11

[10] But I wasn’t talking about unbelievers who indulge in sexual sin, or are greedy, or cheat people, or worship idols. You would have to leave this world to avoid people like that. [11] I meant that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don’t even eat with such people.
