The Difference Between a Boss and Christian Leadership

Split-image showing the contrast between worldly leadership and Christian leadership. On one side, a harsh corporate boss stands over stressed employees in a dark office. On the other, Jesus kneels in a warm cross-shaped light while helping an overlooked man off the ground, symbolizing servant leadership and compassion.
The world teaches leadership through power and position, but Jesus showed us that true greatness is found in serving others. Real Christian leadership doesn’t climb over people — it kneels beside them and helps lift them up.

Mark 10:42-43

[42] But Jesus called the disciples together and said: You know that those foreigners who call themselves kings like to order their people around. And their great leaders have full power over the people they rule. [43] But don't act like them. If you want to be great, you must be the servant of all the others.

Are you a leader?

Having held a lot of different jobs, I've definitely seen the difference between a leader and a boss firsthand. Bosses are everywhere, and it's always a wonder how they got there. It's pretty rare for them to have worked their way up the ladder on their own. Most of the time, they get promoted by someone else in a similar position. They often use people as stepping stones and aren't afraid to step on anyone else to make themselves look better. It's everywhere.

God calls us to be leaders. We almost have to forget everything we've seen or learned in this world to understand true Christian leadership. Jesus is the perfect example of how to lead! He washed their feet, came alongside them, and lifted them up. As a leader, you'll have the amazing opportunity to help people in all sorts of ways — from the bottom up.

That is how Jesus led people. No one was too low or too stinky or unclean for the Lord to lovingly show them the way. It was as if outward appearances didn't matter. Crazy thought, right?!

As leaders, we're expected to treat everyone with the same respect. It doesn't matter if someone looks good or bad — we should all treat each other equally. Helping someone just because they look good is just as wrong as not helping someone who doesn't.

This is where us being sensitive to the Holy Spirit and being led by the Lord is critical. We have the example of how this looks. Jesus wanted to be with the low, the dirty, the criminals, and the outcasts. Real Christian leadership isn't about status or power; it's about serving the people others overlook.

To figure out who the Lord wants us to serve, we need to get rid of all our pre-programmed biases. When God shines a light on our hearts, we can find and work to remove those things that slow us down.

What an honor it is to be chosen to lead in this world that is pulling farther and farther away from God. Christian leadership matters now more than ever before.

You can make a difference.

Thank you, Father, for one more day. Amen.

Mark 10:44-45

[44] And if you want to be first, you must be everyone's slave. [45] The Son of Man did not come to be a slave master, but a slave who will give his life to rescue many people.
